The Magician

This is the first of a series on the Major Arcana of the Tarot.

The Major Arcana cards always indicate important events or timings, and their influence can overpower the other cards in a reading.

The Magician Card represents the beginnings of things.  It gives the esoteric promise that all is progressing. The Magician is the initiate who has studied and gained  mastery over the elements. The magical tools are available, the cup (water & emotions), pentacle (earth & practicality), sword (air & intellect) and wand (fire & creativity).  The flowers around the Magician are red roses for desire, and white lilies for purity.

Under ordinary circumstances, the unfoldment of  manifestation takes place slowly.  When you invoke the Magician and employ magical practice it accelerates the pace.  It is through harnessing the power of emotion and through focused will that the greatest magic occurs .

The sign of Infinity is seen over and crowning the head. The Magician's belt is seen in many decks as the a snake (wisdom) with its tail in mouth. The influence of this card is said to be mercurial, and Mercury or Hermes was the Messenger of the Gods. The idea of alchemical Mercury was a flowing, shifting, ever-changing force.  Another attribute was Thoth, an Egyptian Master of Wisdom. In the Norse mysteries the attribute is Odin, the Wanderer, source of All Knowledge.

The upraised wand in one hand, and the other hand  pointing towards the ground is symbolic of the great metaphysical truth, "that which is above is like unto that which is below".

The Hebrew letter assigned to this card is B (Bes), a sound of internal activity. It has the meaning  of  house. This card is said to be the opening of a door through which the new energies arrive.  Thus the house is filled.  On the Tree of Life the Magician is the pathway from Kether (first manifestation, the root of all things),  to Binah (understanding which unites and brings together all form).

We have the ability of the Magician to change ourselves and our perceptions.  Using your favorite deck of tarot cards, bring out the Magician and place it where you will see it often.  During this next month use this card when you meditate. Imagine or visualize going into the card and  speak with the Magician to learn your personal message. Smell the flowers and sense the sunlight.  Make these experiences as real as you can. Do remember though that you are exercising a new muscle, so begin slowly and work up to longer meditative times.  Be sure to write down what you learn as soon as you come back to your physical surroundings.  This type of meditative process is very much like a dream and will tend to fade quickly.

Stay in Light, Love, Health Prosperity and Abundant Joy.
