Another in a series of articles on the Major
Arcana of the Tarot.
The Major Arcana cards always indicate important
events or timings, and their influence can overpower the other cards in a reading.
The High Priestess is the power of the Moon and
Memory. She wears upon her head a symbol of the Moon and the implication of
High Priestess the Sun
above and behind her head is noted. On her breast is the cross of matter, honoring
the four major directions, and in her hands she holds the book of the law held sacred by
memory. She sits between the pillar of white (male energy) and the pillar of black (female
energy) symbolizing the middle path. These pillars are related to the
two sides of the Tree of Life and celebrated in Masonic traditions as well.
Her skirt becomes the river of life and she is wise from all ages.
She is the Moon Goddess and her color is silver.
She is the Huntress Artemis, accompanied by her loyal hounds and carrying Her
magical bow and arrow, Hecate, Hera, and Astarte are some of her other many names.
The Moon Goddess is celebrated in many cultures as for example the goddess
Europa (meaning full moon) and Albion (white moon). Her jewels are the moonstones
and pearls.
The Hebrew letter assigned to High Priestess is
Gimel and when pronounced in a certain way means a camel, the water-conserving means of
desert transportation. On the Tree of Life, the path of the High Priestess connects
the Kether (the Crown) to Tipharas (Beauty) crossing the Abyss which is likened to a
desert. The High Priestess holds the knowledge of how things were done in the
past and these memories offer a starting point for current action.
When She appears in your reading you will focus on both
the positive and negative elements around you and may find yourself in a waiting pattern
so that you can assimilate and learn the two sides and find the balance for application.
Her realm is in the area of trade or finance and She oversees public activities and
public relations activities.
You are in a holding pattern and will receive the guidance that
you seek. Be patient for changes are taking place internally and will manifest at
the appropriate time. When you have made your decision stick with it and do not let
the destructive patterns of the past dissuade you from taking the road.
Using your favorite deck of tarot cards, bring out the High
Priestess and place the card where you will see it often. During this next month use
this card when you meditate. Imagine or visualize going into the card and speak with
the High Priestess to learn your personal message. Ask Her to consult Her book of memories
which reach back into all times. Make these experiences with the High Priestess as
real as you can and remember though that you are exercising a new muscle, so begin slowly
and work up to longer meditative times. Be sure to write down what you learn as soon
as you come back to your physical surroundings right away. This type of meditative
process is very much like a dream and will tend to fade quickly.
